The Prestonian Lecture 2008

The Prestonian Lecture for 2008 was held at the Riviera International Conference Centre on Tuesday 2nd September 2008.

This year's Prestonian Lecture was given by W.Bro. R.D.T.Sillett. P.J.G.D. and was hosted by Torbay Masters Lodge 8227 under the patronage of The Provincial Grand Master, Right Worshipful Bro. Michael T. Penny.

It is not often that the Prestonian Lecture ventures this far away from the capital let alone be held at such a scenic venue as Torquay. This is one of those opportunities that was not to be missed and at just £24.50 per head it was great value for money. This included dinner, lecture and car park pass. There was also a list of overnight accommodation to suit most people's tastes.

I met my guest at the station and we made our way to the Riviera Centre where we were directed to a suitable area for robing. The main event was taking place on the hall floor and the majority of brethren were seated in the balcony area. The views varied depending on where you sat and what part of the ceremony was taking place.

The added advantage of using radio microphones ensured that everybody was able to hear the proceedings even there were some blind spots at times. The microphones also provided some light humour when the wearers made remarks aside but forgot about the microphones!

The lecture was based on the language of freemasonry and was delivered with great enthusiasm by W.Bro Sillett. As part of the event there was a booklet on the lecture available for purchase, with the proceeds being donated to charity.

Once we were seated for the main meal it was served with great speed and was piping hot. The food was of a good standard and was enjoyed by everybody on our table!

My guest and I enjoyed the event and once back home, we spent considerable time discussing freemasonry and a whole host of other subjects. Funny how a good, convivial event can dredge up extra energy and enthusiasm even when you are tired and have to go to work the next day!
